DBT and Parenting Strategies for Raising Teens

Updated: Nov 18, 2021

DBT has been truly a blessing and a great recourse in my therapeutic work with families. Too often I receive calls from parents who feel like they have tried many solutions and are starting to fear that nothing will ever work. They are very surprised when I tell them that change is possible and all they need is skill building. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said "Life is a journey, not a destination".

DBT is a comprehensive treatment which was originally designed for people with multiple disorders and suicidal behavior. It is a change based approach, especially effective with people (adults and teens) who are very sensitive to rejection and criticism.

As the author, Dr. Linehan explains, dialectics brings together the opposites and connects them to promote a lasting change and acceptance. The focus of this treatment approach is to build a life worth living. It is an effective and evidenced based treatment. In the attached video, Dr. Marsha Linehan and Dr. Laura Kastner discuss how to effectively parent a dysregulated teen while promoting love, trust and secure attachment. Enjoy!
